Linux and the ThinkPad

Notes about my move to Linux on the ThinkPad

2018-01-28 Bought a Lenovo ThinkPad and installed Ubuntu on it. Here are my

notes….

Had to install dropbox .deb via sudo dpkg -i ./file.deb because it hung when just double-clicking the installer.

sudo apt install gnome-tweak-tool sudo apt install vim

Why does the Trackpad click usually show right-click menus?

sudo apt install texlive-full

sudo apt install ledger sudo apt install git sudo apt install zsh

Installed oh-my-zsh

sudo apt install pass sudo apt install pandoc

Imported GPG keys from iMac

sudo apt install isync

got errors so installed isync from source

Still got errors so installed OpenSSL and libraries

sudo apt install libssl-dev

Then configured isync

./configure --with-ssl
make
sudo make install

Can't build emacs 25.x so updated via ppm as here: http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2017/04/install-emacs-25-ppa-ubuntu-16-04-14-04/

sudo apt install autoconf (so I can install mu4e from source)

Installed mu4e using installation instructions and all dependencies

Changed mu4e path in .spacemacs to include the /mu4e directory

Installed Source Code Pro font (ttf versions) https://github.com/adobe-fonts/source-code-pro/releases/tag/2.030R-ro/1.050R-it

2018-01-30 Upgrading to 17.10 (from 16.04)

sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade
sudo apt install update-manager-core
sudo vi /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades
(Change line to Prompt=normal)
do-release-upgrade

2018-01-30 Reinstalled mu after upgrade

sudo apt-get install libgmime-2.6-dev libxapian-dev
sudo apt-get install guile-2.0-dev html2text xdg-utils
git clone https://github.com/djcb/mu.git
cd mu
autoreconf -i && ./configure && make
sudo make install

Two-finger scrolling wasn't working after the upgrade. Ran the following which fixed it:

$ sudo modprobe -r psmouse
$ sudo modprobe psmouse

couldn't encrypt using Pass so had to do…

gpg –edit-key KEYID > trust

2018-01-31 Installed msttcorefonts to get Times New Roman for LaTeX

I sure hate the trackpad

Had to do the psmouse thing again after a reboot. Is this really necessary every time? Created a script in ~/bin/fixscrolling to make it easier.

No longer using the Dropboxed version of .emacs.d because builds of certain extensions don't seem to be compatible between Mac and Linux

2018-02-03 Still getting "Error parsing PCC subspaces from PCCT" on boot

ubuntu unable to create a DBus proxy

2018-02-03 Manjaro i3

Installed from ISO. Ignored warnings about hardware because I couldn't read them

$ sudo pacman -Syu

$ sudo pacman -S firefox-developer-edition

Mapped Caps Lock to Control

$ setxkbmap -option ctrl:nocaps

Another option might be https://github.com/alols/xcape

Better yet, use .Xmodmap

clear lock
clear control
keycode 66 = Control_L
add control = Control_L Control_R

Tweaked trackpad behavior

Updated libinput configuration for Natural Scrolling and better click behavior on the Trackpad

$ sudo vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/30-touchpad.conf

Added the following

Option "NaturalScrolling" "true" Option "ClickMethod" "clickfinger"

Disabled click to tap by setting: "Tapping" "off"

Installed zsh

$ sudo pacman -S zsh

Installed yaourt so I could install dropbox via AUR

$ sudo pacman -S yaourt

Then

$ yaourt dropbox

Selected #10 and go. Ignored warning about unsupported package

Installed Emacs 25.x

$ sudo pacman -S emacs

Installed mbsync

$ sudo pacman -S isync

Imported gpg key from imac

$ gpg –import ~/secret-imac

Installed LaTeX

$ sudo pacman -S texlive-most

Removed shortcut widget from desktop

It's run by conky.

$ sudo vi /usr/bin/startconkymaia

Remove the line with shortcut option

Installed mu/mu4e

$ pacman -S mu

Symlinked /usr/bin/mu from /usr/local/bin/mu

Installed aspell and ispell

Fixes emacs startup errors $ sudo pacman -S aspell $ sudo pacman -S ispell

Didn't work so I disabled the spell-checking layer

Installed Source Code Pro font

$ sudo pacman -S adobe-source-code-pro-fonts

Installed the No Squint plugin for Firefox

Damn small fonts everywhere

Installed pulseaudio so sound would work

installpulse. Then went to Audio->Pulse Audio and configured. Rebooted and now I have sound.

Installed ag for search

$ sudo pacman -S thesilversearcher

To Try

Krita for photo editing Cerbero for Alfred replacement

Log

  • Installed VS Code

2018-03-03 Installed Hack font (ttf-hack) and used it for urxvt

Edit .Xresources and changed font to hack

URxvt*.font: xft:Hack:Regular:size=10 URxvt.bold.font: xft:Hack:Bold:size=10
